SUBMITTING TO SPIRITUAL AUTHORITIES

SUBMITTING TO SPIRITUAL AUTHORITIES

Hebrews 13:7 and 17

As Christians, we should know that there are some people God has placed over us as spiritual authorities and it's required of us to always submit to them in every affair of our lives. The Bible says that in the multitude of counsellors, there is safety (Proverbs 11:14).

It’s not just enough to listen to our pastors/teachers from afar during ministrations on Sundays and some other times; but we must find grace to move close to them, relate with them and, much more, carry them along, especially when going through issues in life.

It's possible some of our past mistakes wouldn't have occurred if we had involved our spiritual heads. Some people are still in some form of bondage today because they failed to inform a spiritual authority, especially  when the whole issue started.

We must always remember that sin has more hold on us as long as we keep hiding it. We must always learn to expose our darkness (James 5:16).

Should you go about broadcasting all that's  happening in your life? No. But wisdom requires that you involve some few trusted believers (especially your pastors) who are more spiritually mature than you are, when going through challenging situations in life.

A lot of believers only involve their pastors when considering a marriage relationship. But it shouldn't only apply to relationships, but to the minutest issues confronting us.

Even when we directly hear an instruction from the Lord (especially pertaining to crucial matters), we should submit it to spiritual authorities over us for proper scrutiny; they'll pray along and be sure it was the Lord who spoke  (Hebrews 13:7, 13:17).

We're not to depend on man but on God; and we're to go to God first before consulting anyone else. However, it's very vital that we carry our spiritual leaders along in our journey with the Lord. This is why God raised them - to watch over our souls and stand in the gap for us always. Their prayers, exposition of God's Word, counsel, consolation and spiritual oversight serve as a shield and guide, and ultimately help us to grow deeper roots in the Lord (Jer. 3:13)

The Christian race is a personal one, but submitting to spiritual authorities will definitely contribute to making it a smoother, safer and triumphant journey (2 Chronicles 20:21).

God bless you!
