Dear Distinguished -- On First Fruits

Dear Distinguished,

Below is the conversation your home girl had with her(your) best friend on  the evening of January 1st, 2021.

Me: Thank God for this mummy who came visting and just dash me X00. My tithe, offering and first fruit is ready. That means the money I'll get from daddy on Monday will be used to buy dgfhfu, make gdjtjtju, pay for the fhhuohrbbh, and the remaining one, I'll spend it abeg. Sorry, I'll pay my tithe out of it first.
Holy Spirit : Eh ehn, is it that X00 you want to pay as first fruit?

Me: Yes na. Shebi that's the first gift I got this year. I'll pay it unfailing.
Holy Spirit : What about that 6yards of Ankara your daddy gave you some hours ago?

Me: Ehn?
Holy Spirit: Yes? Is that not supposed to be your first fruit? How much does 6yards of Ankara cost? You know it's even big Ankara? So convert it to cash and pay that as your first fruit.

Me: Ohhhhh. Why nau? Me I don't have that kind of cash o. Where will I see such money?
Holy Spirit : Withdraw or transfer to church account.

Me: Ah. And I had plans for that money o. I was already rejoicing that I've seen first fruit.
Holy Spirit : So because the one you want to give is in hundreds and the actual first fruit you got is in thousands, you're not happy again?

Me: Nooo. It's not like that o. Oya no vex. I'll pay it like that. I'll withdraw tomorrow and pay it on Sunday.
Holy Spirit : And you're not rejoicing. You're suddenly sad, na wa o

Me: Sad? Noo. I'm not sad anymore. In fact see me dancing nau
Holy Spirit : Eh ehn. That's better. Give me the X000 as first fruit and spend the X00. You can even use it to buy card sef...

You see this issue of first fruit ehn, if God has not worked on your heart to understand the reasons why and the blessings attached to it, you will always think of it as a ponzi scheme. You'll ask questions of how God expect you to cope without January salary given the fact that the month usually have part A, B and C. Salary that was not even enough for a month, you should give it all without hope of getting money anywhere else.

In case you don't understand what first fruit is, it is an offering given to God in the first month of the year. It is the first salary you get as an employee, the first profit you make as a sole proprietor, the first harvest you realise as a farmer, the first returns you receive as an investor or the first income/money gift you get as a teenager who is not employed. Sho get?

I bet some teenagers are saying thank God, I'm not working, I don't have to pay first fruit. May I shock you my darling? You see that 1,500 your uncle gave you on January 1st? It's your first fruit. That gown your sister gifted you, is also your first fruit. Am I communicating?

I know that sounds extreme. And you must be wondering how I expect you to take a gown to offer in church on Sunday. Fear not my Father's child, I'm with you on this one. How much do you think the gown should cost roughly? Don't reduce the price o, God knows how much even if I don't. Make an estimate of what the gift cost, withdraw form your account, envelope it, take it to church on Sunday and offer it with thanksgiving. See? It's as easy as eating pizza.

Don't worry about what you'll eat or drink for your Heavenly Father knows you'll have need of these things. He has provided already. Just play your part by honouring Him with your offering and with the first fruit of all your increase. Did I mention the unexpected contract which came looking for me just minutes after I decided to let go of my 'big money'? God does not owe abeg. And I know this is just one of the many blessings that was attached to my initial obedience.

Let your light so shine in giving; prove Him now, and see if He'll not open the windows of heaven on you.

Selah,
The Distinguished.

  2. I learnt, truly.
    I have a question.
Let's assume that a person got 3k as the first gift this year and the person is new to this. Like, he or she didn't know about the whole first fruit thingy and the person already spent the 3k, what can be done? Can the person give the money later on, when he or she has it?

  6. Wow this is really eye opening. We honour God with our substance and the firstfruits of our increase. Thank you so much for this, Sister Faith. (don't ask me why I'm 'sistering' you o) πŸ˜‚.

Now, does my last wage or salary in the year count as my firstfruits? I know someone who was going to sow his first salary to a particular Ministry but eventually had to sow it to another. He then decided to sow his second salary which was also coincidentally his last salary for last year to the first Ministry. He still called it his firstfruits while sowing it. And he sowed it for a business he had not yet done but planned to start this year. He called it his firstfruits for that business. Is he right to have called it his firstfruits?

    I hope you get ma.

This is a lengthy one I must say.
But, yes sir ,I get your question πŸ˜‚.

To answer your first question, your last salary, wage, profit or income for the year does not count as first fruit.
Except you got a raise from your previous salary.

Say all through Jan to Nov 2020, you received $50,000 as salary.
If in Dec, your salary was increased to $70,000, the increment becomes first fruit because that is the first time you're receiving it.

So for Dec, you pay $20,000 as first fruit and pay your tithe of $5,000 on the old salary rate. Jooget?

    2. About the second salary this friend of ours offered as first fruit, I believe it should have been tagged a seed.

Since it's not first salary for the job or the year.
      I may be wrong thoπŸ˜‚
But he had the mind to pay his first fruit and he did.

Why did he pay first fruit twice and to different commission sir?

Or did he offer the initial first fruits a different offering and decided to pay it properly the next month?

    3. Finally, you don't sow first fruit in advance of the harvest sir.

You offer it after the harvest. In the Old Testament where first fruit was first initiated among the Israelites, they brought to the priests the first of all their plants, livestock and other produce. (I'll get the Bible passages on this and post in the next comment).

From this, I can say that what was offered in Dec last year was a seed or first fruit of the work started last year.

Yunno, our friend could have just given this January's salary as first fruit. He should still give it sha cause it's the first month of the year. Except he has paid first fruit from another income.

As far as I am concerned, he has not paid first fruit for the business in progress. He only sowed a seed. When God blesses the business and gives him a bountiful harvest, he'll take the first fruit to GodπŸ™Œ

    4. Scriptures on First Fruits

      Deuteronomy 18:4; 26:2-4
      Nehemiah 10:35-37
      2 Chronicles 31:5
      Ezekiel 44:30
      Proverbs 3:9-10

  7. It really pays to be faithful in paying it, I once did it without expecting anything soon from God and he surprised me when I almost lost hope on something.... Thanks for this eyes opening,it is bringing my mind back to it cos I haven't been paying attention to it anymore....God will bless you for sharing this 😍
