What is Prayer?
"Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication. In the narrow sense, the term refers to an act of supplication or intercession directed towards a deity (a god), or a deified ancestor."
The subject prayer is a broad one at that and a very crucial part of your walk with God in fellowshipping with him. One of the major area of developing a good and viable relationship with God is by praying. It is through our prayers that we speak to God and develop the ability to hear from him when he speaks. Prayer is a very important part of our lives as believers.
God created us to be totally dependent on him Acts 17:28 (KJV) "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring." God is your father, and just like a father would do, he wants you (his child) to be dependent on him, cast all of your cares on him. Have you listened to jireh by Maverick City? A part of the song caught my heart and I believe it'd catch yours too, it says "if he dresses the Lilies with beauty and splendor, how much more will he clothe you, if he watches over every sparrow, how much more does he love you" The essence of this is that wants us to solely depend on him and how do we totally dependent on God? it's by prayer, Prayer helps you to see into the heart of your father (God) and see that which he wants for you
Have you ever asked yourself why you can fellowship with God in prayer? It is because he is our father. Matthew 6:9 (KJV) "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." can you pray to someone you do not know? No!
Just the same way you can walk up to your earthly father and commune with him about certain things bothering your mind, how much more your heavenly father who has the answers to every of your heart desires and unlike your earthly father, you do not need to walk towards him all that is required of you is just to speak and he hears you from wherever, how wonderful it is!
...Now that you know basic truths about prayer, how can you pray effectively? Here, I've written out some steps and I pray the holy spirit helps you to understand. Amen...
★ Entering into his presence with Praise and Thanksgiving: Psalms 100:4 (KJV) ''Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name." Entering into the presence of God is likened to entering into a gate, but to enter, all that is required of you is uttering words of adoration to him, there's a version that paints a nicer picture and I would love to share with you Psalms 100:4 (MSG) "Enter with the password: "Thank you!" Make yourselves at home, talking praise.Thank him. Worship him." Have you been to some gathering where you have a passcode to enter? You'd see that in those setting, only few persons have that passcode or better still only those invited have such passcode. but with God? It isn't so. God has made the password known to everyone because he wants you to fellowship with him in prayer and in doing that, you need to first enter into his presence with the word "Thank you Lord!" As short as the word could sound, it would open the gate into the presence of God.
★ Pray in Faith: Matthew 21:22 (YLT) "and all--as much as ye may ask in the prayer, believing, ye shall receive." Sometimes last year, an uncle promised me a birthday gift even though it was past my birthday, at first it sounded normal like every other person who had promised me a gift but later on i remembered that my uncle actually works with the Bank of Industry and that alone made me believe that I was going to get the gift knowing that he's fully capable, I mean he's rich! And at the end of the day, it was a nice gift after all. If I can so much believe in an uncle how much more God? The one who created things, Colossians 1:16 (KJV) "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:"
★Pray in Accordance to God's will: 1 John 5:14 (AMP) "And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us." Whatsoever be it that you ask of God, so long as it pertains to the will of God, he surely would give you answers to those prayers. An example of the will of God over your life can be found in 3 John 1:2 "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." Therefore, whenever you pray for prosperity or healing, God is set to answer as prosperity and healing is the will of God for man.
